Local Taxis began in 2019 with a single car and one driver in Blaydon. The idea was simple: give people in Tyne and Wear a taxi service they could actually rely on. No inflated prices, no cancellations, no sitting on hold for twenty minutes. Just honest, dependable rides from someone who lived round the corner and actually cared whether you got to work on time.
Honest fares, no surge pricing, real drivers — not algorithms. We run one standard 24/7 tariff. Every driver is DBS-checked, licensed, and local. We believe a taxi company should be judged on reliability, not marketing spend. When you book with us, you know exactly what you’re paying and exactly who’s picking you up.

We’re growing the fleet, improving the app, and expanding coverage — but we’ll never stop being local. No venture capital, no board in London. Every decision is made by people who live here and use the service themselves. Our goal is simple: be the taxi company Tyne and Wear deserves.

2019 — One Car, One Driver
Local Taxis started in Blaydon with a single car and one driver. The idea was simple: give people in Tyne and Wear a taxi service they could actually rely on. No inflated prices, no cancellations, no sitting on hold for twenty minutes.
2020 — Word Spread
That single car turned into two. Then five. Then ten. Word spread, not through flashy marketing, but because people told their mates. We launched the Local Taxis app, grew across Ryton, Prudhoe, Whickham, Gateshead, and the wider Tyne Valley.
2021 — Gabbys Taxis Partners With Local
We partnered with Gabbys Taxis, expanding our coverage into Ryton and Greenside. Gabbys was the first taxi company many of our team worked at, and previous owners Darrel and Heather are like family — they and their two sons are still very much part of Local. More drivers, more areas, same honest service. Still family-run, still based in Blaydon.
2022 — Gateshead Cars Joins
Gateshead Cars came on board, strengthening our coverage right across Gateshead. More local drivers who know every street, every shortcut, every school run.
2024 — Gilmores Direct Joins
We welcomed Gilmores Direct in Prudhoe into the family, bringing over 30 years of trade experience. 50+ drivers, 25+ areas, and still growing. Every decision is made locally, by people who live here.
